"History of Rock Music in 500 songs" is so damn great. Glad you're talking it up. The episode with Tiny Tim imitating Dylan blew my mind. II think it was the one about Music from Big Pink?) Next time I see you I'll tell you about the time I conversed with Richard Thompson at Sevananda :)

I think you’re the one that got me hooked on 500 Songs.

Love the paean to curiosity. Let’s just make sure it’s tempered with a hefty helping of wonder. ❤️

Your wide ranging syllabus is perfectly you, Daren. Please keep us informed on your progress. (And I would suspect that gal across the dinner table provides terrific opportunities for German conversation!)

Let’s just say that she doesn’t grade on a curve.

I listened to episode “song 183, ‘Pinball Wizard’”- all 4 hours of it in 2 parts - from “History of Rock Music in 500 Songs” as a random choice, and was stunned by the Robert Caro-like level of research and detail. There really is no podcast like it. Please recommend a favorite episode.

There’s a couple that really stand out for me. Hendrix’s Hey Joe is great because it’s largely about the origin of that song, which is weird and twisty. Another is Kick Out the Jams by MC5—mainly to listen to how he manages to avoid getting a problematic rating while covering a story where the f-word is central to the narrative.

Thank you! I look forward to listening.

I told my 2nd sister today that we needed to relive our dorm experiences (except in my case, without the random piercings). So I’m afraid that I’m going to have to strongly suggest that you should, in fact, live in a dorm. And turn down that music! 😄

I had a roommate named Skippy my freshman year. Just to be clear, that wasn't his name when he arrived. One of the punkish hall mates listened to him for two minutes and dubbed him Skippy. Skippy decided that was a perfect nickname and started to introduce himself that way. Imagine me living in a 200 sq ft room with Skippy.

I’m not sure who has my sympathy - you or Skippy! 😄😄😄

You know me, I don't say "Talk dirty to me" (well, 'cept to Kristin), I say "Talk music to me."

I've started a little journey somewhat akin to the "500 songs" project, but it's much more diminutive in each post, befitting my lack of extra time in this season of life.

It's probably gauche to post a link to my site whilst responding to something on your site, but here's my IG which has had 8 entries so far in my little series: "I Think This Just May Be ... The Best Song Ever!"

Back to your post. Keeping curious and open to new information is indeed the key to everything ... even if it's a curiosity that sometimes points inward, as Socrates would have us do.

You’re always welcome to promote and link your work, brutha. BTW, did you spot that I have a character named after Curtis Mayfield in my book?

Noel M's avatar

Oooooo, I did not notice that when I read it, sorry. What's the character's full name? What inspired you to make that particular connection when thinking of a name for that character?

In the opening chapter, Joe is hidden on a train by a porter named Mayfield, because the songwriter of People Get Ready should be acknowledged in that moment.
